A full-time postdoctoral position will be open in April 2010 to conduct research studies in experimental oceanography.

Post duration:                       5 years, 01 April 2010 – 31 March 2015 *
Salary group:                        14-TV-L
Working hours per week:   39

Responsibilities:
Research associate is responsible for academic service in the working group. Outside of these tasks the associate has the opportunity to individual research activities, further academic education and acquiring teaching experience. The tasks also provide opportunities for further scientific achievements, therefore at least one third (1/3) of the contracted working hours will be granted for their own scientific works.

Requirements
The post requires an academic degree in natural science, preferably in Physical Oceanography, and a Doctoral degree. Several years of postdoctoral experience would be of advantage.

Applications are invited for a PhD position of the EU funded research project THOR, the aim of the project is to establish an operational system that will monitor and forecast the development of the North Atlantic Thermohaline Circulation (THC) on decadal time scales and assess its stability and the risk of a breakdown in a changing climate.

Post duration:                       32 months, 01 April 2010 – 30 November 2012 *
Salary group:                        13-TV-L
Working hours per week:   26 (2/3 of a regular position)

Research associates are responsible for academic service in the corresponding project. Outside of these tasks the associates have the opportunity to further academic education, in particular through the completion of a doctoral dissertation. Results obtained by the associate through project work may be used for the dissertation.

Areas of Responsibility:
- Conduct of research in the field of experimental oceanography, especially on ocean climate with focus on the North Atlantic
- Assist in the organization and the scientific supervision of the mooring program of experimental oceanography
- Assist in the teaching and academic programs of experimental oceanography including supervising internships, exercises and seminars

Requirements
The post requires an academic degree in natural science, preferably in Physical Oceanography.

In addition, solid and extensive empirical knowledge about climate-relevant ocean processes, ocean circulation as well as expertise in the application of modern measurement techniques of oceanography and experience in working with other scientific groups plus willingness to participate in expeditions at sea would be great advantages.
